Abstract

708,997. Fluid thrust bearings. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 15, 1953 [May 23, 1952], No. 13142/52. Class 12(1) In a hydraulic thrust bearing in which a central thrust member 34 is supported by lubricating liquid under pressure, the hydraulic pressure is generated by the load itself acting on an enclosed quantity of the liquid. As shown the thrust member is a ball 34 resting on a part spherical seating 22 provided in a bearing body 8 which is integral with a ram 4. The latter is slidable in a cylinder 7 and has a central bore 17 whereby lubricant in the cylinder is in communication with the underside of the ball 34 and the seating 22. The body 8 is guided by a ring 6 in the supporting structure 2. On application of load, a layer of lubricant is forced between the ball 34 and its seating 22. Leakage of lubricant may be controlled by a restricted orifice 18 or adjustable needle valve in the bore 17. In a modification, in order to prevent sinking of the ram due to leakage of lubricant, an admission valve 3 is attached to the bottom of the ram 4 through which fluid under pressure is admitted from a line 9. The line 9 is fed from an accumulator 10 which is supplied by a pump 12 from a sump 13 in response to a pressure sensitive relay 11. Alternatively the thrust member may be in the form of a disc or ring.
