Class 60 A grinding unit for grinding the face 62, Fig. 4, of a valve-actuating member 59 of an internal-combustion engine comprises a drive-shaft 6 guided in a valve-guide 58, and an abrasive element 7. If the rocker arms 59 are ground in their own cylinder head 50, they must first be removed from the head to facilitate removal of their actuating mechanism and then re-assembled on the head which must be detached from the cylinder block to allow removal of the valves 54 and insertion of the shaft 6. If it is desired not to disturb the head 50, the rocker arms 59 may be removed therefrom and assembled for grinding on a different head detached from its block. The shaft 6 may be an exact fit in the guide 58, or bear in a sleeve centred in the guide 58 by a tapered end-part 11 and a tapered nut 13 engaging projections or threads on the other end of the sleeve. After the shaft has been positioned in the guide 58, the abrasive element, which may comprise a stone or disc carrying an abrasive such as emery cloth, is screw-threaded onto the end thereof and rotated by a hand-held electric drill driving through a chuck 45. A spring 70 rocks the arm 59 about its shaft 60 to keep it in engagement with the abrasive element 7 as the latter is reciprocated to produce the curved surface 62. In Fig. 3, the unit is applied to the grinding of a tappet 40 in its position in a sidevalve engine from which the head has been removed.
