Abstract

708,600. Impedance networks. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 27, 1952 [June 29, 1951], No. 16252/52. Class 40 (8) A microwave transmission system includes a coupling device making use of the so-called " line-ground " system described in Specification 704,050. The coupling comprises two line conductors 1, 9 which are spaced from a ground conductor 2 by the thickness of an insulator 3. The conductors 1, 9 may be printed on the insulator 3. The ground conductor 2 is wider than the line conductors and may comprise one of the walls of the chassis of the apparatus. A length #/2 of the line 9 runs parallel to the line 1, the distance between the lines determining the degree of coupling. In order to obtain directional coupling, an attenuator pad 11 of lossy, conductive material is disposed on or adjacent to a terminating portion 10 of the line 9 in the manner described in Specification 708,589. The line 1 may be connected to a coaxial input line 5 in the manner shown in Fig. 2 a dielectric bead 7 being inserted in the end of the coaxial line to compensate for the discontinuity caused by the joint 6. The line 1 may lead to a transmitter, receiver &c. 8. Fig. 4 shows a non- directional coupling arrangement. The terminal portions 14, 15 of the line 13 are turned at right angles to the line 1 and the parallel portion is continued beyond the terminal portions for a distance #/4. The outer ends of the #/4 portions 16, 17 are connected to the ground line 2 at 18, 19. A directional coupling may be obtained if one connection such as 14 is omitted with or without omission of the grounded section 17. The remaining section 16 then presents a highimpedance termination. The insulation 3 may be dispensed with, the conductors being supported above the ground conductor, e.g. by the ground connections 18, 19.
