Abstract

708,432. Securing pipes to walls. TRUE FLUE, Ltd. April 30, 1952 [Jan. 30, 1951], No. 2330/51. Class 99 (2). [Also in Group X] An external chimney stack adapted to be erected against an existing wall so as to be completely proud of the front face of the wall, comprises a plurality of superimposed prefabricated hollow sections each having a vertical smoke bore and individually secured against said face of the wall and a lower unit with a vertical smoke outlet to align with the vertical bore of the immediately adjacent one of said sections and with a rear opening said rear opening and vertical outlet both communicating with a soot collecting chamber or box in said lower unit, an upper one of said sections carrying a pot structure. The predominating portion of the stack shown (Fig. 1) is constituted by pre-cast hollow blocks 1 each having flanges 4 for wall attaching purposes and a central refractory tube 8 the space between tube and the shell 2 of the block being filled with an insulant 9. The tubes 8 are cut back (Fig. 3) so that when the blocks are cemented together rings 11 of similar material may be fitted to seal any gaps occurring across the opposed ends of successive sections 1. The lower unit 14 of the stack is a soot box, it being formed with a tubular part 16 for connection to the stack sections 1, a soot box door 18 and an opening 21 for receiving the flue pipe 22 of a domestic boiler or other appliance. A corbel 23, secured to the wall, is provided below the unit 14 to assist in carrying the weight of the stack. In order that the stack may pass through the eave a flashing unit 32 (Fig. 11) is used and above that is cemented in position a crown flashing unit 33 (Fig. 1, 2) having a configuration such as to enable a prefabricated chimney pot unit 34 with downdraught preyentative unit 38 to be superimposed thereon. In Fig 9 two flashing units 32, 32a, are interposed between the uppermost section 1 and the flashing unit 33 the flashing 37 being carried between the units 33 and 32a and also between the units 33 and 34. In a modification (Fig. 7)'latitude in positional relationship of the unit 14 and the flue pipe of the boiler or other appliance is allowed by moulding the refractory lining 15 of the unit to a shape which will accommodate in its rear part an angularly adjustable short pipe 27 adapted to receive the flue pipe. In a further modification the corbel 23 is replaced by a number of prefabricated support sections which are carried down to ground level from the unit 14.
