708,364. Testing welded joints. MECHANS, Ltd. Nov. 10, 1952 [Nov., 28, 1951], No. 27938/51. Class 106 (2) A method of obtaining free bend tests on welded test pieces comprises giving the ends of a test piece a slight directional set wherein the centre of the weld is at the point of maximum displacement, mounting the two ends of the test piece in bearings permitting rotational movement of the ends on bending of the test piece and' exerting pressure on both the ends, the pressures being directly opposed, and at least one being positive. When carrying out a series of tests a work piece is prepared in rectangular plate form with a weld running centrally between and parallel to two e.dges of the plate which is then cut into a number of strips with a portion of the weld between the ends of each. To carry out a test on a piece 7 its ends are given a slight directional set and clamped by screws 8 in blocks 5 each having a pair of aligned pintles 9 adapted to bear in recesses 15 in pairs of pillars 13, 14 projecting from plates 12 shaped to co-operate with the jaws 'of a machine, not shown, adapted to be closed up until the pintles 9 engage in the recesses 15. Pressure is then applied to bend the test piece 7 whose ends rotate freely. The amount of elongation in the weld region can be measured without dismantling and is always visible.
