Abstract

The invention comprises acrylonitrile, the polymerization of which has been inhibited by the addition thereto of hydroquinone monobenzyl ether. Concentrations of the order of 0.5 to 1000 parts per million by weight are suitable. The stability of the product to oxygen under pressure is shown. The ether may be removed by distillation or solvent extraction.ALSO:Hydroquinone monobenzyl ether may be used as a polymerisation inhibitor in the distillation of acrylonitrile. Concentrations of the order of 0.5 to 1,000 parts per million by weight are suitable. The inhibitor may be introduced into the distilling column in which acrylonitrile is being distilled.
