Abstract

Purification of (meth)acrylic acid in aqs. solns. contng. (meth)acrylic acid and acetic acid as main components, by extracting the aqs. soln. in an extraction zone with an org. solvent, passing the extract to the upper end of a first distillation zone which has a vaporiser at the lower end, distilling the extract soln. at an absolute pressure of =300 mm. Hg to form a vaporised distillate consisting of all the org. solvent and water, most of the acetic acid and >=10% of the (meth)acrylic acid, removing this fraction at the top of the column to give high purity (meth)acrylic acid as bottom product, and leading the top product to a second distillation zone in which the vaporised distillate is azeotropically distilled by boiling with reflux cooling of water by which organic solvent is removed at the top of the column and an aqs. soln. of (meth)acrylic acid and acetic acid of increased concn. is obtd. as bottom product, adding the distillate from the top of the column to the extraction zone and adding the bottom product with the aqs. soln. of the starting material to the extraction zone or to an acetic acid separator. The process gives (meth)acrylic acid of high purity and uses less steam and columns with less theoretical plates than known processes.
