Abstract

708,062. Moulding concrete. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION Jan. 22, 1952 [Nov. 13, 1950], No. 27704/50. Class 87 (2) Pre-stressed, reinforced or plain concrete members are made by inserting one or more deformable members into a mould so as to lie transversely of the length thereof to divide the mould into adjacent longitudinal casting sections and/or to provide an end stop, subjecting said members to stress 'to cause them to be pressed against the side of the mould and thus lengthened, pouring concrete into the mould sections, and, when the concrete has set, removing the stress, whereby the reduction in length of the members facilitates removal thereof. Figs. 1, 2 and 5 show such a deformable member used as a partition, the member comprising three parts A, B, C made of rubber, gelatine or thermoplastic or other resin having rubber-like deformation under load. The parts are grooved at c, d, so that reinforcing wires h, i may pass through the member. The parts are assembled around the (pre-stressed) wires in a mould, Fig. 2, comprising sides e, f, base g, fixed stop k and wedge j. The side f is capable of movement towards and from side e, and is moved towards e by means of screw clamp m and wedge j, the wedge acting on a part l of side f. When the side fis thus moved, the member is deformed, being reduced from thickness W to thickness X and correspondingly lengthened. The concrete is cast, the side f is removed, the parts of the member are peeled away (Fig. 5) and the wires are severed in the gap thus made. In modifications :-(1) The part C may be made of wood. (2) The member may be in one piece. (3) (Fig. 7.) Each part A and B may be in two parts A<1>, A<2> between which a metal reinforcing plate a is disposed, Dowels r, t facilitate assembly. (4) (Fig. 8.) The member is an inflatable envelope 1 having a valve 2, bracing means 7 and a slot to accommodate the concrete reinforcing wires 3. (5) (Fig. 11.) An inflatable tube 9 conforms generally to the configuration of the interior of the mould.
