Abstract
Caprolactam is separated from a solution in sulphuric acid or oleum by (a) neutralizing the solution with aqueous ammonia or ammonium salts having an alkaline reaction; (b) separating the caprolactam oil mechanically from the aqueous layer containing dissolved ammonium salts, and (c) mixing the oil with an alkali metal compound or with an alkaline earth metal compound having an alkaline reaction in sufficient quantity to convert the ammonium sulphate dissolved in the oil to an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt, separating the solid substances formed and distilling the oil at reduced pressure. Suitable alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compounds are sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium borate, barium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, potassium silicate, sodium formate or potassium acetate. In the example a solution of caprolactam in sulphuric acid prepared from cyclohexanonoxime by the Beckmann process is neutralised with aqueous ammonia; the resulting oil is mixed with sodium hydroxide, filtered and distilled under reduced pressure.
