Abstract

The invention comprises thiosemicarbazones of the general formula <FORM:0708013/IV (b)/1> in which R is one or more halogen, acylamino, hydroxy, aryloxy, alkoxy, nitro, carboxy, carboxyalkyl, carboxyalkoxy or alkylsulphone groups, and R1 is a heterocyclic or homocyclic aromatic group. Examples describe the preparation of the thiosemicarbazones of the following ketones, by reacting the ketone with thiosemicarbazide in the usual way: (1) benzalacetophenone; (2) 4-methoxybenzalacetophenone; (3) 4-ethoxybenzalacetophenone and also the 4-n - propoxy-, 4 - allyloxy - and 4 - n - butoxy - compounds; (4) 3 - methoxybenzalacetophenone; (5) 4,41 - dimethoxybenzalacetophenone and also the 4-methoxy-41-methyl and 4 - methoxy - 41 - chloro - compounds; (6) 4 - ethoxy - 41 - methylbenzalacetophenone (obtained from 4 - methylacetophenone and 4-ethoxybenzaldehyde); (7) 4 - acetoxybenzalacetophenone (followed by hydrolysis of the product to 4-hydroxybenzalacetophenone-thiosemicarbazone); (8) 4-acetylaminobenzalacetophenone; (9) 4-nitrobenzalacetophenone; (10) 3,5 - dibromobenzalacetophenone and similarly the 4-chloro- and 4-methoxy-41-bromo-compounds; (11) 4-ethylsulphone-benzalacetophenone (obtained from 4-ethyl-sulphonebenzaldehyde and acetophenone); (12) 4-methoxy-41-methylmercaptobenzalacetophenone (obtained from 4-methylmercaptoacetophenone and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde); (13) 4-carboxybenzalacetophenone (obtained from benzaldehyde-4-carboxylic acid and acetophenone) also the 4-carboxy - 41 - chloro -, the 41 - carboxy - and the 4-methoxy-41-carboxy-compounds; (14) benzalacetophenone - (4b ) - acrylic acid (obtained from 4-formylcinnamic and acetophenone; (15) 4-carboxymethoxybenzalacetophenone (obtained from 4-formylphenoxyacetic acid and acetophenone) and also the corresponding 3-carboxymethoxy compound; (16) b -naphthyl - (4 - methoxystyryl) - ketone; (17) thienyl - (4 - methoxystyrol) - ketone (obtained from a -thienylmethylketone and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde); and (18) 5 - cinnamoyl - 8-hydroxyquinoline (obtained from benzaldehyde and 5-aceto-8-hydroxyquinoline).
