Abstract

<PICT:0707882/III/1> Microphonic carbon granules are treated by continuously agitating the granules in a container with a rapidity, an intensity and for a time sufficient to increase their electrical resistance to a value that will remain substantially stable during use. The resistance may be increased by 100 per cent. by rapidly vibrating the granules. Carbon is fed into small tube 13 and thence to larger tube 14 which is inclined downwardly and mounted on support 18 and the tubes are vibrated by making support 18 the armature of an electromagnet. The rate of flow, which with the vibration intensity controls the degree of stabilization, is controlled by adjusting the space 15 between tubes 13, 14 by means of screwed portion engaging fixed threaded tube 16, while the vibration intensity is adjusted by regulating the voltage, e.g. at 110 volts 60 cycles, applied to the electromagnet windings. The carbon passes from tube 14 through resistance measuring cells. An atmosphere of nitrogen or hydrogen may be used in place of air. Specification 272,279, [Class 40 (iv)], is referred to.
