Abstract

707,640. Control of A.C. motors. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES. May 11, 1950 [May 11, 1949], No. 11829/50. Class 38(3) [Also in Group XXXV] A system for changing the frequency, and if desired the number of phases, of the supply to a line R2, S2, T2 from a line R1, S1, T1 comprises a rectifier 2 and an inverter 3 serially connected through their D.C. circuits between the two lines, a synchronous machine 4 whose A.C. windings are supplied from the line R2, S2, T2 through a regulatable transformer 5, and control means 6 for rendering the inverter 3 operative in synchronism with the voltage of line R2, S2, T2, the machine 4 being driven during part of each half-cycle of the latter voltage and generating during other periods thereof. By altering the ratio of transformer 5 the machine 4, when generating, is said to vary the amplitude of the voltage of line R2, S2, T2 which causes the control means 6 to vary the instant of invertor ignition; this corresponds to an instantaneous phase change in line R2, S2, T2 which causes in turn the speed of machine 4 to vary until a new equilibrium is attained at an output frequency f2 different from that previously obtaining. A separate line R3, S3, T3 may be supplied by a generator 7 driven by the machine 4. The rectifier and invertor are Graetz connected and the D.C. circuits include a choke 8. The invention may be employed for the common speed regulation of a number of electric motors, e.g. in the travelling grate drives of boiler installations, or for frequency changing in railway traction supply systems.
