Abstract

707,543. Reservoir pens. BIRO PENS, Ltd. Oct. 11, 1951 [Oct. 13, 1950], No. 25004/50. , Class 146(3) [Also in Group XXXVI] A writing ball, for a ball-point pen. having at least its outer layer made of aluminium or aluminium alloy, has its exterior surface electrolytically oxidized to resist chemical action of the ink and wear of the ball during writing. The ball may be of relatively soft material such as aluminium, and the depth of the anodized layer may be from 3 to 5 microns in depth. The balls can be finished by a lapping process using corundum powder. In the electrolytic oxidizing process (see Group XXXVI), preferably oxalic acid and direct current are used, and the balls are of pure aluminium, or of a magnesium-aluminium alloy with up to 9 per cent magnesium.
