707,509. Milling. SUNDSTRAND MACHINE TOOL CO. June 3, 1952, No. 13949/52. Class 83 (3) A machine comprises means for moving a tool-head 13 through a cutting and a reverse stroke, and means 30 on the head for engaging a workpiece beyond the cutting station and moving it to the cutting station B on the reverse stroke. In a milling machine, the cutter and its driving motor 18 are mounted on the head 13 which is reciprocated by a piston 15 attached thereto. The head is moved rapidly up to a workpiece, such as a cylinder head 21 clamped at the cutting station B, and then at a slower speed while cutting takes place. The dogs 30 on the head co-operate to move the workpieces to and from the cutting station. After a cutting-stroke, one dog engages a lug 21<SP>1</SP> on a workpiece at a loading section A and the other engages a similar lug on the finished workpiece. The head then moves back and the dogs tilt slightly (30c) against a spring 55 and allow a switch 58 to actuate an indicator to show that workpieces are being moved. If a workpiece meets an obstruction, the dogs are tilted further (30d) to compress a spring 60 and allow a switch 66 to operate and stop the head. Should the head fail to stop, the dog tilts free of the projection 21<SP>1</SP> (30c) and remains locked in that position. A spring 45 allows the dogs to tilt in the opposite direction (30a) when the head is advanced. The dogs may be locked in an upward position (30b) when the machine is adjusted.
