Abstract

The development of pink discoloration in a vulcanized rubber article, e.g. the core of elastic yarn, containing symm. di-beta-naphthyl-p-phenylene diamine as antioxidant is inhibited by incorporating in the rubber formulation before vulcanization 2,5 di-tert. butyl hydroquinone. The rubber may contain 0.25-2.0 per cent. of symm. di-beta-naphthyl-p-phenylene diamine and 0.25-5.0 per cent. of 2,5 di-tert. butyl hydroquinone. Accelerated testing of samples by exposure to carbon arc light, filtered to approximate natural sunlight, is described. Specification 380,368, [Group IX], is referred to.
