707,050. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. Oct. 24, 1951 [Oct. 27, 1950], No. 26319/50. Class 100(1) Separators.-In a machine for separating sheets from a pile and of the kind comprising one or more grippers, usually suction grippers 18, supported for movement towards and away from the top of the pile to separate sheets therefrom, the grippers are supported on brackets movable horizontally on racks adjustable vertically in relation to the machine frame. The machine frame comprises uprights 1, 2 and side members 3 providing bearings for the end roller 4 of the conveyer. Pivoted at 5 to the side members are rack members 6 having at their free ends slots 10 for the reception of eccentrics 9 mounted on a shaft 8 rotatable to move the ends of the racks up and down to provide a vertical adjustment for the grippers. A lever 11 is rotatable to lock the shaft 8. Brackets 14 connected by rods 15 are displaceable horizontally by rotation of a shaft 16 carrying gears 17 at the ends meshing with the racks 6. By this means the grippers may be moved horizontally to accommodate for sheets of different sizes. The driving cam shaft 22 for the separating suction grippers 18 and forwarding suction grippers 19 is itself driven through bevel gears by an extensible shaft 24 having universal joints at each end.
