Abstract

706,611. Freight containers, FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd. April 14, 1948 [April 17, 1947], No. 10228/47. Class 18 [Also in Group XXXIII] A freight container comprises a frame to receive panels of corrugated sheet material to form the walls. floor and roof, the troughs of the floor and roof panels 25 extending transversely, and the troughs of the corrugations of the wall panels 26 extending vertically, at least one end wall being removable and the co-operating end of the container being provided with means to secure the container to the end wall or to a similar adjacent container, the means being located at the top and bottom corners of the end of the container and consisting of male or female units to co-operate with complementary units on the adjacent end wall or container. As shown in Fig, 9b, the fastening members consist of hooks of the kind described in Specification 706,612, [Group XXV]. The invention is described in connection with freight-carrying aircraft (see Group XXXIII), rollers 60 on the bases of the containers engaging rails in the fuselage to facilitate loading and unloading. A number of containers with their ends in position may be secured together to provide a series of separate compartments, or the ends may be removed to provide a single longer stowage space. Discs 58 are also provided at the bases of the containers for engagement with discs on road wheel units, which may be of the kind described in Specification 706,613, [Group XXXII], by means of which the containers may be transported, Fig. 15 shows a typical arrangement of containers and transport units. The rollers 60 are mounted at the ends of arms 61 which may be lowered to serve as ground supports for the containers when the road wheel units are removed.
