Abstract

706,613. Turnable fare carriages. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., CHAPLAIN, H. E., COSTIGAN, F. J., and MORREY, P. April 14, 1948 [April 17, 1947], No. 6203/49. Divided out of 706,611,. [Group XXXIII]. Class 108(2) A road-wheel unit for a freight container or the like,. comprises two road wheels rotatably mounted at respective ends of a transversely extending frame having a member secured centrally thereto and formed with a gap and self-locking socket to receive a vertical pivot on a standard container and shaped to correspond with a seating on the container. As shown, the road-wheel unit comprises a pair of wheels 85 mounted on a tubular axle 86 to which a tow-bar 87 is attached. The axle is carried in bearing brackets 88 attached to road springs which support a frame 90 comprising a pair of transversely disposed beams connected together at their ends by members 94. A turntable base-plate, 91. mounted on the frame 90 is formed with a gap which converges inwardly to a centrally disposed spring-loaded selflocking socket 92 in which is received a vertical pivot attached to the underside of the container. The spring-loaded lock is released by a handle 93. The unit is provided with a spring-loaded towing hook 96. The axle 86 and each bearing bracket 88 are both drilled and provided with quick-release pins for locking the tow-bar 87 when the unit is being manoeuvred under the container. The unit is provided with a servo brake unit 100, which may be connected through piping on the container to similar braking systems on other roadwheel units or a towing vehicle. An overriding manual brake lever 104 is also provided. The unit may be attached to the container which may be of the type .described in Specification 706,611 [Group XXXIII], in a steering or non-steering capacity; in the latter, an adjustable support pad 97 at each side of the frame 90 bears against the underside of the container to which the tow-bar 87 is anchored by means of a shackle 98 and a quickrelease pin. In this position the tow-bar acts as a radius rod and a brake torque reaction member.
