Abstract

706,466. Electro-medical apparatus. STRONG, C. L. Sept. 12, 1952 [Oct. 15. 1951], No. 22809/52. Divided out of 706,439. Class 81(2) Electro-medical apparatus for producing rhythmic muscular contractions effected by Faradic currents comprising a vibrator for interrupting an electric current which passes through a step-up transformer and has a surge imparted to it by a surger driven by an electric motor.is characterized by the provision of a remote control unit adapted to be located remote from the generator and provided with means for controlling the strength of the current applied to the patient. A generator A comprises a source S of electric power connected across a switch 10 located in the remote control unit B, an electric motor 15 and a circuit containing a surger 24, driven by the electric motor 15, and a telltale lamp 25 located in the remote control unit B. A vibrator 17 connected across a battery 18 is also provided in the generator A and produces an interrupted current which passes through a step-up transformer 19, the secondary windings of which are connected with a potentiometer 21 in the remote control unit B and a second surger 20 which is also driven by the electric motor 15. The patient is connected with the potentiometer 21 by leads attached to terminals 22 or a plug and socket connection 23, the potentiometer 21 serving as a device for adjusting the strength of current passing to the patient. The switch 10 operates a relay 11 which opens or closes switches 12, 13, 14 in the motor, vibrator and tell-tale lamp circuits respectively. The surges produced in the tell-tale lamp 25 give an indication of the rate of surge of the current applied to the patient. The generator A is connected with the control unit B by a multiwire cable 30 secured by plug and socket connections 31, 32. The cable 30 may be dispensed with and the control unit B plugged directly on to the generator A Specifications 671,445 and 706,439 are referred to.
