Abstract

Alkylene oxide-amine condensation products are described as in Specification 705,335 and it is further stated that the products may be converted into their sulphuric esters. In an example methyl-laurylamine is condensed with 5 mols. of ethylene oxide and the product esterified with chlorosulphonic acid.ALSO:Nitrogenous fibres are dyed with metallizable wool dyestuffs in the presence of an agent yielding metal and a non-resinous water-soluble reaction product of 4 or more mols of an alkylene oxide with a compound containing a primary or secondary amino group or containing a tertiary amino group and an alcoholic hydroxyl group (having not more than two nitrogen atoms attached to the same carbon atom), or a salt or suphuric ester or quaternary derivative of such reaction product. Suitable reaction products are those described in Specification 705,335. Suitable dyestuffs are sulphonic and carboxylic acids of o : o\sv-dioxy-azo compounds and their carboxylic esters [see Specifications 606,814 and 636,681], o : o\sv-amino-oxy-azo compounds and o : o\sv-oxy-carboxy-azo compounds, and dyestuffs containing a salicylic acid grouping. The agent yielding metal may be a chromate, or a cobalt salt of an inorganic or organic acid. Other salts such as ammonium sulphate and sodium acetate may be present. Of the three components of the dyebath, viz: dyestuff, metallizing agent and condensation product, two may be added as a preformed mixture, obtained by grinding the constituents together, if desired with a diluent such as dextrin or urea. The pH may be caused to fall during the progress of the dyeing. The process is applicable to natural and synthetic nitrogenous fibres, e.g. wool, silk, casein, polyamides and polyurethanes; it is especially suitable for loose wool. The fastness to rubbing may be improved by after-treatment in the dyebath or in a separate bath with a salt of an alkyl-amyl-sulphonic acid. In the examples, which all relate to the dyeing of wool, the dyebaths consist of (1) the dyestuff 4-nitro-2-aminophenol --> m-phenylenediamine-4-sulphonic acid, sodium chromate, the product from dodecyl-amine and 6 mols of ethylene oxide, sodium sulphate and ammonium sulphate; (2) as in (1) using the condensation product from hydrogenated abietylamine; (3) as in (2) using the dyestuff 1 - amino - 2 - naphthol - 4 - sulphonic acid --> 2-naphthol; (4) as in (3) using the condensation product from ethylene oxide and the amide of triethylene tetramine with coconut fatty acids; (5) as in (2) using the dyestuff 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid --> 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone; (6) the dyestuff 4-nitro-2-amino-phenol-6-sulphonic acid --> 5 : 8-dichloro-1-naphthol, cobalt acetate, the product from dodecylamine and 6 mols of ethylene oxide, and sodium sulphate; (7) the dyestuff 4-chloro-2-aminophenol-6-sulphonic acid --> 5 : 8-dichloro-1-naphthol, cobalt acetate, the product from ethylene oxide and hydrogenated abietylamine, and sodium sulphate; (8) as in (3) followed by after-treatment with a sodium alkyl-aryl-sulphonate; (9) as in (3) using a quaternary derivative of the condensation product; (10) as in (3) using the sulphuric ester of the condensation product from methyl-laurylamine and 5 mols of ethylene oxide.
