Abstract

705,575. Road-traffic signals on vehicles. O'SHEI, W. E. Sept. 27, 1951 [June 28, 1950], No. 16193/50. Class 118 (2). A vehicle direction indicator of the semaphore arm type operated by engine suction has its operating motor located remote from the indicator arm, the movement being transmitted through a mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic transmission mechanism. A semaphore arm 1 is pivoted on a shaft 2 carried in a bracket mounted in the door pillar of a vehicle, Fig. 2 (not shown). A pinion 3 fixed to the shaft 2 engages a rack 4 on a connecting rod 5 which extends to the diaphragm 7 of a suction motor 8 situated at the base of the pillar, below the vehicle, or in the roof above the pillar. A control valve 10 serves to connect suction line 9 to one or other side of the diaphragm 7, simultaneously opening the opposite side to the atmosphere, and thereby causes'the arm 1 to move to its displayed or non-displayed position respectively. A lock to hold the arm 1 when in its non-displayed position is provided by omitting one or more teeth from the pinion 3 as indicated at 22 so that a smooth portion of the rack 4 may prevent rotation of the pinion 3. To enable the arm 1 to be raised manually a break-back arrangement consisting of a pivot 27 and spring 28 is provided. Alternatively the rod 5 may operate the arm 1 via a flexible locking device as described in Specification 635,067. A modification comprises an oscillating paddle type suction motor having a rocker arm coupled by cables to a rocker arm fixed to shaft 2 of the arm 1. A further modification provides a flexible bag to be compressed by the suction motor to inflate a second flexible bag connected to it by a sealed air-line; the second flexible bag being located adjacent the semaphore arm and operating it via a rocking arm. Alternatively the movement of the suction motor may be transmitted by a pneumatic or hydraulic line utilising auxiliary small size pistons or diaphragms at the arm and suction motor respectively.
