704,154. Coating with selenium. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd: Nov. 8, 1950 [Nov. 8, 1949], No. 27344/50. Class 82 (2) In a process for coating metal plates with selenium by thermal evaporation in vacuo the deposition is assisted by a potential difference maintained between the plates and the selenium. The plates may be pre-coated with bismuth before the coating of selenium is applied. As shown, plates 23 to be coated are held in lugs 22 on a disc 21 which can be charged to a high potential. Crucibles are placed on a plate 18 which may be rotated by a motor 20. Two exhaust pipes, 14 and 16, are used, giving partial and high vacua respectively. One of the plates 26 is attached to a lever 27 pivoted at 29 and 30 and counterbalanced by a weight 31, so that after a predetermined weight of selenium has been deposited the lever 27 will make electrical contact with the stop 33 indicating the end point of the process.
