Abstract

704,012. Broaching. CLEVITE, Ltd. June 18, 1951, No. 14392/51. Class 83 (3) A method of finishing half-bearing shells for combustion engines in one continuous operation comprises the steps of broaching one surface of the shell and then clamping the shell by the finished surface while the remaining surfaces are broached. A bimetallic strip for a bearing shell is first pressed into a half-round form with excess metal at the ends. The shell is then clamped in a broaching machine and tools 24 remove all but 0.01 in. of the excess metal. In a second broaching machine, having a tool-slide 25 which is advanced in a single finishing stroke past the shell, the shell is first positioned by blocks 30 and clamped by slightly tapered lands 26a while the edges are accurately finished by tools 27. Clamps 40 then engage the finished edges to hold the shell while it is finished internally by the broach 28. Alternatively, the internal surface may be finished before the edges.
