Abstract
703,662. Heating fluids by electricity. HEAT-X-CHANGER CO., Inc. July 13, 1951 [July 20, 1950], No. 16647/51. Class 39 (3) An electric fluid, e.g. water, heater comprises a helical water tube 26, 30, Fig. 3, and a concentric helical electric heating element 20, a cast metal block 18 surrounding the tubes 26, 30 and element 20 to provide good heat transfer therebetween and to act as a heat reservoir, a control element 36, selectively responsive to the temperature of the block 18 and incoming water, being mounted on the surface of the block 18. The water heater 12, Fig. 2, comprises the aluminium block 18 cast about copper water tubes 22 and two coiled electric heating elements 20, the block 18 being supported in a metal casing 14 by means of insulating annular rings 15, 23 and a metal cylinder 13, a stud 17 positioning the block 18 in the casing 14. The space between the block 18 and casing 14 is filled with fibre glass. Water enters at 28 and flows through an inner copper coil 26, Fig. 3, and then by an outer concentric coil 30 to the exit 32. The elements 20 are arranged between the coils 26 and 30 with their turns interspaced to form a double helix. The bulb 36 of a thermostat is adjustably placed in a well 38 adjacent the inlet 28 and acts to close the heater circuit at a low temperature and open it at a high one. Thus when no water is flowing, the block, with any water therein, is maintained at a high temperature. The heater 12 is described in conjunction with a coin-actuated device for supplying hot beverages.
