Abstract

703,531. Dynamometers. THILLAIMUTHU, J. Jan. 17, 1952 [Jan. 20, 1951], No. 1344/52. Class 106 (2). [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVIII] Apparatus for measuring the horsepower output of a rotating shaft comprises a tachometergenerator for measuring the speed combined with a torsion meter for determining the torque, the latter affecting the position of the brushes of the tachometer-generator, whose output voltage is thus proportional to speed x torque, i.e., H.P. Torsion meter. This has a flange member b (Fig. 1) keyed to the input shaft a and facing a smaller flange member d and connected thereto by a single turn spring e, one end of which is screwed to b and the other to d. The periphery of flange b is threaded to receive a sleeve g whose back end is attached by screws i to a plate h which, together with flange d, is keyed to the output shaft j, but with plate h free to move axially on shaft j. Thus, when the shafts a, j transmit torque, the torsion causes shaft j to lag on shaft a, and the rotation of plate h unscrews sleeve g to move the assembly to the left, the axial movement, through a shaft m, being proportional to the torque. This is assembled on the shaft j, comprises a combined armature-commutator n (Fig. 3) and permanent magnets r, the brushes t being carried on a cylindrical sleeve u rotatably mounted in a bearing v, and having a shaped groove w on its surface which engages a finger y carried by the torsion meter shaft m. Thus the movement of the shaft m, produced by the torque in the shafts, alters the position of the brushes t, and the output voltage of the tachometer is proportional to both speed and torque. In another embodiment (Fig. 8) the torsion meter has a rigid sleeve b2 over the transmission shaft a2 and clamped to it at one end c2, the free end being attached by levers e2 to a collar g2, whose rotatory motion with torsion in the shaft is transmitted via a cam q2, shaft r2, and gears s2, t2, u2 to the brush rocker mechanism of the tachometer. The latter is driven from the transmission shaft a2 by a chain n2.
