Abstract
920,107. Measuring torque electrically. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 1, 1961 [Dec. 3, 1960], No. 41673/60. Class 40 (1). A shaft 1 (Fig. 2), whose transmitted torque is to be measured, carries spaced toothed wheels 2 each associated with a yoke 3 carrying diametrically opposite permanent magnets 4 and search coils 5, the magnets 4 and coils 5 being located with respect to the teeth on wheels 2 such that with rotation of the shaft 1 the A.C. voltages induced in the coils 5 are each displaced by 90 degrees from each other. The four A.C. voltages are fed to potentiometers A, B (Fig. 1) as shown, and the potential difference between the sliders, when located at the centre points, is zero. When transmitting a torque there is a twist on the shaft producing an additional phase difference between the voltages connected to potentiometer A and those connected to potentiometer B, which is indicated on meter C, and eliminated by moving either of the potentiometer sliders, the extent of the movement being indicative of the twist of the shaft, and therefore of the torque being transmitted.
