Abstract

703,439. Magnetic amplifiers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 29, 1951 [June 17, 1950], No. 12567/51. Class 40 (4) [Also in Group XXXV] In a push-pull magnetic amplifier, four or more rectangular cores 11 are radially positioned so that they form a common central leg 12 which carries one or more control windings 13, while individual reactance windings 19 are arranged on each of the outer legs. As shown in Fig. 1, four cores 11 formed from U or L- shaped laminations are secured in radial relationship by non-magnetic base members 20 which are clamped together by screws 21. Similar upper supporting members 22, Fig. 2, clamped by screws 23 carry rivets 31 which function as connectors between one end of each reactance winding and lead-supported rectifiers 25. The amplifier is secured by screws 27 to a spacing member 26 which is attached to a multi-pin base 28 by'a snap-ring 29, connecting leads between the pins and the amplifier passing through holes 32 in the base members. The windings of the amplifier may be arranged as shown in Fig. 4, connection to an external circuit being effected at terminals 15, 16 and 33-36. As shown, the amplifier comprises a control winding 13, reactance windings 19a-19d and rectifiers 25a-25d which function with external impedances 38, 39 to produce an amplified control signal in a load 37 as described in Specification 703,438. An alternative arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), has the load 37 and impedances 38, 39 connected to terminals 35, 36 and .the a.c. supply connected to commoned terminals 33, 34. This arrangement provides a D.C. output in the load in response to an A.C. control signal or vice versa. The reactance windings and rectifiers may alternatively be connected to the terminals 33-36 as in Fig. 6 so that unidirectional currents pass through external impedances 38, 39, feed back being provided over winding 13b while control is effected over winding 13a. In the external circuit, a centre-tapped transformer 41 provides the A.C. energization. Mention is made of the use of an amplifier with six radial cores in threephase push-pull circuits.
