Abstract

703,201. Carpet sweepers. SCHAPIRO, H. Oct. 2, 1951. No. 22934/51. Class 138 (1) An electrically operated sweeper for carpets and the like has at least two brushes moved by power drive means, from which a mechanism common to both said brushes connects to the latter and imparts, respectively, two movements thereto which are different from each other, at least one of the said brushes sweeping dust and like particles into dust receiving means positioned below said mechanism. The machine Fig. 1, comprises a housing 16 having an open bottom in which are pivotally mounted b dust pans 17, 18 by means of adjustable bearings 101. A platform 22 carrying an electric motor 50 and the brush driving mechanism is supported at its four corners from housing lugs 26 by spring urged link pairs 23, 24. The link pairs 23, 24 at each side of the platform are connected by rods 31 secured to a brace bar 40 which has attached thereto a threaded rod 42 co-operating with a threaded sleeve 45 provided with a handle 47. Movement of the handle will facilitate either raising or lowering of the platform to adjust its position relative to the carpets with different piles. The motor oscillates through gears 51, 52, a crank pin 54 on the gear 52, and a resilient connecting rod assembly 66, a lever 55 secured at its lower end on a shaft 61 carried in bearings 60 on the platform. The assembly 66 comprises pins 56, 56A connected by a shock absorbing spring 49. The shaft 61 is connected at its ends by brackets 63 to a brush 19 which is secured by rods 67 to a similar brush 20 connected to another shaft 61 carried by bearings 69 on the platform. The lever 55, Fig. 4 has at its upper end a lateral extension 75 carrying a pin 76 engaging in a slot 78 in one arm of a bell crank 77 pivoted at 79 to a bracket 80 carried by the platform. A slot 82a in the other arm, of the bell crank co-operates with a pin 82 carried by a block 83 slidable in a guide 86 on the platform. A rod 84 keyed to the block 83 carries, by means of further brackets 63 at its ends, a brush 21 disposed between the brushes 19, 20. When the motor 50 is in operation under the control of a switch 95 the lever 55 will cause the brushes 19, 20 to oscillate alternately to the left and right in Fig. 1 and thus cause dust to be deposited in the pans 17 and 18 respectively. At the same time the pin 76, bell-crank 77 and pin 82 will cause the rod 84 and the brush 21 to be reciprocated transversely in the housing and thus loosen dust preparatory to its collection by the action of the brushes 19, 20.
