Abstract
546,123. Road sweeping machines. LEWIN, W.J., and LEWIN ROAD SWEEPERS, Ltd. Dec. 26, 1940, No. 18137. [Class 107] Relates to machines of the kind having a side or gutter-brush mounted, for rotation about a substantially vertical axis, on an arm which can swing in and out from the side of the machine to maintain contact of the brush with the kerb, and which can also move up and down. According to the invention, the gutter-brush is mounted at the lower end of a rearwardly-inclined rigid shaft carried by a lever which can swing in and out and up and down about its forward end. The invention is shown applied to a sweeping-machine having at each side a rotary gutter-brush 20, Fig. 1, sweeping into the path of a transverse main brush-assembly 15 which delivers to an elevator feeding a bin 13. Each brush 20 is mounted on a spindle 40 carried at the free end of an arm 30, the other end of the arm being connected to the vehicle frame for lateral movement about substantially vertical pins 29, Fig. 3, carried by a pivoted frame 28 which provides for raising and lowering the brush. The brush is rotated by a shaft 21 driving through a ball joint 26 a sprocket 27 connected by a chain 36 with a sprocket 35 driving the spindle 40 through bevel gearing. A spherical joint 31 provides for the continued drive notwithstanding lateral movements of the arm 30. Arms 44, 45 and a link 46 provide a parallel motion for the brush when it is lifted by cable gear 53 connected to a brush suspension lever 52 that supports the weight of the brush by a spring 54 and rod 55. The brush is given an outward bias to maintain contact with the kerb by gravity, or by spring means. If desired, two gutter-brushes may be arranged, one in advance of the other, on one side only of the vehicle. Specifications 545,058, [Group XXIII], and 546,120, are referred to.
