Abstract

703,049. Automatic firearms. BREVETS AEROMECANIQUES SOC. ANON. June 13, 1952 [July 10, 1951], No. 14999/52. Class 92(2) A belt feed mechanism for automatic firearms comprises a feed device P close to the breech mechanism, an auxiliary drive located upstream of the belt and adapted to impart a more regular feed displacement thereto, and a rigid passage 1 disposed between the two feed devices and having a section of such height that the belt can fold in zig-zag fashion with the cartridge assuming a staggered position. The device P' may receive its energy from a moving part of the firearm or from an external source. In the form shown the firearm A recoils with respect to a cradle B carrying the device P, and a cam surface on a recoiling part oscillates a spring-controlled lever 14 which, through a lever 12, oscillates a lever 9 rotatable on the shaft 3 of the auxiliary drive 2. A ratchet arm 10 on lever 9 engages the teeth of a ratchet 7 on a drum 5, the latter housing a spring of which one end is secured to the-drum and the other to the shaft 3. In use the mechanism P imparts a jerky pulling movement to the belt while the device 2, by the provision of the spring motor, gives a drive at constant speed once the spring is tensioned. The passage 1 merges at 1a with the outlet from the drive 2 and with the inlet to the drive P, and is formed internally with part-cylindrical projections b which facilitate the arrangement of the cartridges in staggered formation.
