Abstract

702,820. Ordnance. AKTIEBOLAGET BOFORS. Oct. 21, 1952 [Oct. 24, 1951], No. 26415/52. Class 92(2) Means are provided for decreasing the speed of movement of a transversely sliding breech block during the latter part of its closing movement. In the construction shown, the barrel 1 and breech ring 2 are mounted to recoil with respect to a part 20. The breech ring has guides for the vertically sliding breech block 6 whose movements are effected by a lever 8 on a shaft 9, the latter being connected to an operating arm and being under the control of a coil spring in a casing 10. Stops 4, 5, limit the downward movement of the breech block to its breech closing position. The drawing shows the barrel in the run-out position and prior to the release of a locking device which, when released, permits the breech block to descend by gravity and by the additional force of the recoil spring. Just before it reaches the stops 4, 5 the breech block encounters the upper ends of two spring-urged rods 16, 17, which are mounted in the breech ring and which during the run-out have been brought to a position above the free ends of two levers 18, 19 pivoted on the part 20. The levers are thereby depressed by the descending breech block and in turn serve to depress the rods 21, 22, of pistons working in cylinders 23, 24, connected to an oil tank 30. Each cylinder is grooved internally to allow the slow passage of oil past the piston, thus damping the final downward movement of the breech block.
