Abstract

702,572. Pottery manufacture. COLONIAL INSULATOR CO. Nov. 15, 1951, No. 26773/51. Class 87 (1). [Also in Groups V and VII] A ceramic article such as a former 1, Fig. 6, for making rubber gloves by the dipping process is provided with a roughened, irregular or decorative surface 8 in relief by the following method. A flexible sheet 2, e.g. of rubber, having on its surface the roughened or other design 4 that is to be imparted to the ceramic article is taken, and the recesses of the design are filled with clay slip 5 or other ceramic material. The sheet is then applied to the (unbaked) smooth ceramic article, the slip being in contact with the article. The slip is then dried, the sheet is peeled from the article (Fig. 5) leaving the slip on the article, and the article is baked to set the slip and unite it with the body of the article. Before the sheet is peeled from the article, glaze may be applied to the latter, the sheet being then peeled off to leave the roughened portion as a glaze-free area and the article being then fired. A glove made by dipping from the form shown in Fig. 6 has a rough thick portion at the palm and insides of the thumb and fingers. When the slip is applied to the unbaked article the latter quickly absorbs moisture from the slip, making it difficult for the operator to position the strip correctly on the article : to obviate this difficulty a light coating of a lubricant such as glycerine may be initially applied to the article. The slip may contain waterglass or other adhesive to ensure that it will amalgamate with the body of the article, and may differ in colour from the article. The roughened area may include trade-marks or lettering. The dipping form may be for making bathing caps or balloons. The invention may be applied to the manufacture of decorated porcelain or ceramic ware.
