Abstract
Gaseous ferric chloride is hydrolyzed by steam to ferric oxide on the surface of hot particles of refractory material which is formed into one or more fluidized beds kept in the turbulent state by the gaseous ferric chloride and steam. The refractory material may be ferric oxide, e.g. the end product of the process, or naturally occurring ore, another iron oxide, manganese oxide, alumina, silica, e.g. sand, broken firebrick, kaolin, talc, or a metal, e.g. steel. In carrying out the process, the refractory material, say ferric oxide, at 600-900 DEG C. enters the top of a refractory-lined vessel wherein it forms three superposed beds. Steam with some hydrochloric acid gas present enters below the lowest bed at about 200 DEG C., ferric chloride vapour at say 200 DEG -400 DEG C. entering immediately above the said bed. Hydrochloric acid gas and steam escape at the top of the vessel. The refractory material with deposited ferric oxide is discharged at the bottom, part being bled off, part being passed to the top of a reheating vessel wherein it is fluidized in three beds by gases produced by the combustion of fuel gases beneath the lowest bed. The reheated refractory material then passes via a cyclone separator to the top of the reaction vessel. Specification 677,645 is referred to.
