Abstract

A cosmetic comprises at least one proteinate of a metal having an electrical potential of from +2.42 V to -0.55 V dissolved or dispersed in a diluent suitable for use in cosmetic compositions for application to the skin or appendages of the skin. Specified proteinates are those of magnesium, aluminium, manganese, zinc, chromium, iron, cadmium, titanium, tellurium, cobalt, nickel, tin, copper and bismuth. Specified diluents are mineral, vegetable or animal oils or fats, e.g. white soft paraffin, castor oil, almond oil, olive oil, cottonseed oil, cocoa butter, stearin, lanoline and lard; waxes, e.g. beeswax, paraffin wax, carnaubawax and ozokerite; alcohols, e.g. oleyl alcohol, glycerol, glycol and cetyl alcohol; camphor pentanedione-2, 4; ethylene glycol monophenyl ether, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, a glycol fatty acid ester, eugenol, geraniol, rhodinol and carvacrol. Other additions are wetting agents such as sodium alkyl sulphate, sorbitan trioleate and triethanolamine stearate; anti-oxidant, e.g. sodium or magnesium hyposulphite thiourea, thiodiglycol or thioglycerol; dyes; skin nutrients, e.g. vitamin F, vitamin A; provitamins, e.g. carotene; hormines, e.g. oestrone, oestradiol and testerone; perfume, e.g. oil of lavender; antiseptics, e.g. quaternary ammonium compound and 2:21 dihydroxy 3:5:6-31:51:61 hexachloro-diphenylmethane, and skin penetrants e.g. pyrolindone or isopropyl myristate.
