Abstract

A brilliantine composition comprises colourless and odourless petroleum hydrocarbon oils of viscosity between 5 and 27,5 Engler units at 20 DEG C. and density between 0,85 and 0,89, gelled at elevated temperature by an aluminium, magnesium or lithium soap of an aliphatic fatty acid having a C16-C18 chain, the proportion of said soap ranging from 4 to 12 per cent by weight of the hydrocarbons, and a perfume or other odoriferous substance to mask any oily or other unpleasant odour of the material. The brilliantine may be prepared by heating the hydrocarbon oils and soap to a temperature of 110-190 DEG C. until the mixture is transparent, cooling at a controlled rate so that the temperature drops from 120 DEG to 50 DEG C. in one hour, and then adding the perfume. The fatty acid may be unsaturated or saturated. Small proportions of oils, fats, waxes such as lanolin, colouring agents, vitamins and antiseptics may also be added. In an example paraffin oil is gelled at 130 DEG C. by aluminium stearate, conventional amounts of castor oil, perfume and vitamins being added.
