Class 106 (2) [Also in Groups XXIV, XXVI and XXXIV] The amount of wear in the thrust bearing of a rotary machine is measured by the variations of oil pressure in a pipe which passes through the thrust bearing casing and discharges on to a side face of the thrust bearing disc and so near to the disc that a throttle effect is produced which varies with the distance between the disc and the discharge orifice. An oil pipe e passes through the casing d of a thrust bearing and has its discharge end disposed at a short distance s from one side face of the thrust disc a. The oil pressure in the pipe e which varies with variations of the distance s acts on a spring loaded piston f which actuates a release device g of an emergency shut off device. An orifice plate h maintains as far as possible the supply pressure of the oil constant. To enable the operator to check the axial displacement of the thrust disc, a pressure gauge i is connected to the pipe e between the orifice h and the discharge end. Since the gauge i only gives correct measurement of the displacement of the thrust disc when the pressure before the orifice h is constant, a second pressure gauge l is provided. The readings of these two gauges can be used in conjunction with a graph to give an accurate measurement of the wear in the bearing. Specification 693,021 is referred to.
