Abstract

701,514. Cathode-ray tubes. SOC. GENERALE D'ELECTRONIQUE. June 12, 1950 [June 11, 1949; May 24, 1950], No. 14634/50. Class 39(1) A method of manufacturing screens, for example for use in the light modulation system described and claimed in Specification 684,706 comprises arranging on the insulating layer 2 of a metal plate 1 a network of parallel filaments 3, evaporating an " intermediate " substance 4 on to the layer 2, removing the filaments 3, arranging a similar network of filaments 8 on the layer 2 in another direction, evaporating metal 7 on to the substance 4, removing the second network 8 and removing the substance 4, Figs. 2, 4. The filaments 3 may be of nylon, silk or metal and have a diameter of 20 microns and a pitch of 80 microns; they may be wound round the rectangular plate 1, 2 or stretched across a frame to form a grating and the grating is then applied to the plate. The filaments may be cylindrical or square in section. If a grating is used it may be utilized for the second evaporation as well as the first by rotating it through 90 degrees. The two evaporations may be effected obliquely e.g. at 45 degrees so as to form separations between the elements 4 and 5. If the evaporations are effected normally instead of obliquely a series of corrugated parallel metal tapes are obtained instead of discrete square elements 7, Fig. 7 (not shown). The intermediate substance 4 may have a thickness of 1.5 microns and may be paraffin wax and is finally removed by evaporation or a solvent. The insulating coating 2 is deposited by anodizing, evaporation, or electrophoresis.
