Abstract
701,507. Centrifugal pumps. HAYWARD TYLER & CO., Ltd., and IVANHOFF, A. Jan. 31, 1951 [Nov. 1, 1949], No. 27948/49. Class 110 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] In a motor-driven pump in which the pump and motor are housed in virtually a single casing, the level of the casing in relation to the external system through which the pump circulates liquid is such that, when an air outlet giving egress from the upper end of the casing is opened, any air in the casing will escape and the casing will be filled with liquid from the external system. The motor-driven pump described in Specifications 701,509, 701,510 and 701,511, comprising a motor casing 1 joined to a pump casing 2 by a neck portion 3, circulates water between the water drum 4 and the water tubes 5 of a boiler. Before use, a cock 16 is opened, and water from the boiler fills the casings 1, 2, 3, the air being expelled through an outlet 15 which is situated a distance h below the water level 17. To prevent damage to the motor windings, the water is cooled in a cooler 9 before entering the casing 1, the circulation being maintained by an auxiliary impeller at the top of the motor shaft. If air collects at the top of the casing 1, the circulation stops, and it becomes necessary to repeat the, air-expelling, operation. Warning is given by a thermometer 21a, which may be arranged to actuate an audible device. To prevent the rate of air release from becoming so high that hot water passes directly into the casing 1, the flow is restricted by a fine bore tube 19. A porous metal plug between the cock 16 and the tube 19 prevents the latter from being clogged by foreign matter. Alternatively, an additional cock, separated from the first cock by a length of pipe, may be provided, the two cocks being operated in succession so that air; first enters and is closed off in the length of pipe and is then released therefrom. The pipe may be of oval crosssection to render it expansible. The direction of now through. the coil 9 may be opposite to that shown. The cock 16 may be situated at the highest point of the cooling circuit.
