GAS AND OIL WELL.
Application filed March 31, 1823.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, dorm Gr. MAYES and LAMBERT L. KIMMELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Hazen, in the county of Jefferson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas and Oil Wells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus employed in connection with gas or oil Wells, and has for one of its objects to provide a portable pumping means whereby the pressure is accelerated when from any cause the natural pressure is reduced below the normal, to insure the requisite free flow of the well.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character capable of being coupled to a plurality of wells, so arranged as not to interfere with the ordinary operation of the wells.
With these and others objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved apparatus, with parts broken away.

The improved apparatus includes a main supporting frame represented conventionally at 10, and mounted on carrier wheels 11 and provided with a suitable hood or housing represented as a whole at 12. Supported upon the frame 10 is a suitable motor indicated conventionally at 18, and a tank or reservoir 14 for a cooling liquid.
Depending from the main frame 10, preferably near one end, is a platform 15, and supported on the platform is a suitable pumping element represented as a whole at 16 and including an inclosing water jacket indicated at 17 The water jacket 17 is connected near its upper part by a conductor 18 with the upper part of the tank 14 and connected near its lower part with the tank near its lower part by a conductor 19 as shown. By this means as the cylinder of the pump becomes heated,the heat will be radiated into the water in the jacket and cause it to rise through the conductor 18 into the tank and be replaced by the cooler water flowing through the conductor 19, and thus Serial no. 629,149.

The drive shaft of the motor 13 is coupled at 20 to the piston rod 21 of the pump, to produce the requisite action of the same.
The casings of a plurality of wells are indicated conventionally at 22, and each with a controlling valve, represented conventionally at 28, coupled to each casing.
A main line conductor is represented at 24 and provided with a shut off valve 25. Branch conductor pipes 26 connect each of the controlling valves 23 with the main line conductor 24 at one side of the shut off valve 25, and the intake of the pump 16 is also connected to the main line conductor at the same side of the shut off valve, by a branch 27. The outlet side of the pump 16 is connected to the main line conductor 24 at the other side of the shut 05 valve 25 by a branch 28, as shown. The branches 27 and 28 are provided respectively with shut off valves 29 and 30 and union couplings 31 and 32, so that the vehicle carrying the motor and pump may be disconnected from the main line conductor 24, and these branches are also provided with shut ofi valves 33 and 84, so that the main line conductor 24 may be cut off from the pump mechanism and connected directly with the wells by opening the shut off valve 25.
By this arrangement so long as the pressure in the wells is sufiicient to cause the free flow therefrom, the pump carrying vehicle will remain disconnected, by closing the valves 33 and opening the valve 25. However if the pressure falls below the normal, the pump element may be connected to draw the oil or gas from the wells by closing thev valve 25 and opening the valves 83, as will be obvious.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be manufactured of any required size or capacity, and maybe moved fromone place to the other by disconnecting the unions 31 and 32, and applied to another system of the wells.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claim may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
