Abstract
701,491. Testing strength of yam. COOK & CO., MANCHESTER, Ltd. July 10, 1952 [Oct. 2, 1951], No. 17390/52. Class 106 (2) In apparatus for testing thread by suspending weighted means in a loop of thread which is being continuously advanced by driving means each side of the loop, the first driving means advances the thread at a constant speed, the second and following driving means advances it at a relatively higher but constant speed and an adjustable tension device in advance of the first driving means is controlled by a connection to the weighted means. As shown, the thread 1 passes through an adjustable tension device, comprising a pair of opposed discs 2, 3, a biasing spring 4 and control stem 5, and is then trained round a pair of stationary snub bars 6, 7 to increase the drag applied by the tension device. The thread is then trained round 'a plurality of snub bars 8 all of which are driven e.g. by an endless chain, from a motor. Next, in the control loop is suspended a pulley 11 and from the pulley block is suspended a platform 13 to receive weights. From the loop the thread enters second driving means comprising a similar series of snub rollers 14 similarly driven but controlled to ensure that thread is taken out of the loop faster than it is fed in, e.g. by passing the second drive through a double-cone type of adjustable speed control. The weighted pulley 11 serves to elongate the thread and for any relative speed of the drive means, variations encountered in the thread will cause the pulley 11 continually to tend to rise and fall. The pulley is stabilized by causing the tendency to rise and fall to adjust the tension device and hence the elongation of the loop. Downward movement of the pulley 11 rocks a lever 18 about its pivot 19 through a cable 17 and a cable 21 rocks a bell crank lever 22 about its pivot 23 to move the control stem 5 to the right in Fig. 2 to increase the tension in the thread. Conversely a tendency for the pulley to rise causes the tension to be relieved. Several holes 20 in the lever 18 for connecting the cable 21 enable the .leverage to be adjusted and a spring 25 inserted in the cable 21 absorbs shocks, minimizes hunting and ensures that the force exerted on the thread corresponds to the dead weight of the applied load. To ensure prompt stopping of the feed when the thread breaks the falling of the weight may actuate a switch 26 to open the motor circuit 27.
