Abstract

701,338. Induction heating. OHIO CRANKSHAFT CO. Nov. 16, 1951 [Nov. 30, 1950], No. 26867/51. Class 39 (3) Successive lengths of an elongated metal strip, which is intermittently advanced longitudinally, are heated by an induction heater which continuously reciprocates relative to the strip. A metal strip A is intermittently advanced by a feeder C through an inductor unit D to a forge or press B. The inductor unit comprises a pair of inductors 10, 11 mounted on opposite sides of the strip, and each inductor consists of three laminated stacks 15 which are slotted to receive insulated conductors 19. The direction of current in the conductors lying directly opposite each other on opposite sides of the strip is arranged to be in the same direction, so that if the inductor unit were stationary a series of spaced heated bands would be produced across the strip. Liquid cooled frameworks 12, 13, spaced by insulated bars 14, support the inductors, and guides 22 are provided for the strip. The inductor unit is reciprocated on guide rails 30 by a rotated disc 31 and a connecting rod 33. By changing the connection of the rod on the disc the stroke of the unit may be varied. The inductor laminations may be arranged transversely of the strip and the inductor unit may be reciprocated at right angles to the strip length instead of, or in addition to, being reciprocated along its length.
