Abstract

700,542. Electro-dialysis. NEDERLANDSE CENTRALE ORGANISATIE VOOR TOEGEPAST-NATUURWETENSCHAPPELIJK ONDERZOEK. Oct. 30, 1951 [Nov. 4, 1950], No. 25391/51. Class 41 Chlorine ions are removed from a chloridecontaining liquid by electro-dialytic treatment of the liquid in a cell compartment separated from the anode compartment by a diaphragm, a rinsing liquid is passed through the anode compartment and recycled in a closed circuit, and air or other medium gaseous at the working temperature is passed through the rinsing liquid to expel chlorine and thereby to prevent corrosion at the diaphragm or elsewhere in the rinsing circuit. The gas may be passed through the liquid in the anode compartment or elsewhere in the circuit ; it may be used to effect circulation of the liquid. Instead of air, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, or hydrocarbons non-reactive to the anode liquid may be employed. When a reduced quantity of air is employed residual chlorine may be removed by addition of a substance yielding sulphite ions as described in Specification 679,338 ; alternatively these reagents may be added to the liquid undergoing dialysis. The pH of the dialysate should be maintained below 7. An example is described for the desalting of brackish water or sea-water using a three-compartment cell ; all the compartments being fed with the same water. The anode rinsing circuit includes a partly filled vessel whereat separation of gas formed at the anode takes place. The rinsing liquid is sprayed into this vessel at the top and air is introduced at the bottom. In a second example concentrated whey is electro-dialyzed in the midcompartment of a three compartment cell. 0.2 normal sodium sulphate and 0.05 normal sulphuric acid are supplied to the anode rinsing liquid. Air is passed through the anode compartment. Sodium dioxide or a sodium sulphite solution may be supplied to the rinsing liquid after de-aeration. Diaphragms of cellophane collodion or parchment may be employed; the distance from diaphragm to anode may be as low as 1 mm. Specification 431,885 also is referred to.
