Abstract

In a process for increasing the hydrogen content of water gas, steam which may be slightly superheated is introduced into the hot water gas as it leaves the generator thereby reducing the temperature of the gas to a level suitable for conversion of carbon monoxide and steam into hydrogen and carbon dioxide by means of a powdered catalyst which is also introduced into the water gas; after the resulting conversion the gases are freed from the catalyst, cooled, washed with water under pressure and treated for removal of hydrogen sulphide by a dry process. The powdered catalyst may be utilised repeatedly and may be introduced into the water gas by means of the steam. Suitable catalysts are oxides of calcium and magnesium and iron oxide containing substances such as for example meadow iron or red sludges. A temperature of 450-470 DEG C is suitable for the conversion. In a modification water may be sprayed into the hot water gas to form the steam for the conversion any heat required being obtained by partial combustion of the water gas by means of an addition air, oxygen or a mixture of air and oxygen.
