Abstract
700,106. Mounting radar scanning units on marine aircraft. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND, Ltd., and HENNIG, W. H. Jan. 23, 1952 [Dec. 13, 1950], No. 30436/50. Class 4 A marine aircraft comprises a radar scanning unit mounted on one end of a strut. connected at its other end to the hull of the aircraft, said strut being movable in relation to the hull from a position in which said unit is projected well below the hull to a position in which the unit is above the water line and housed within or disposed closely adjacent to the hull. The scanning unit is enclosed in a faired housing 10 fixed to one end of a streamlined strut 11 which is pivoted at its other end 13 to the hull 12, the hinge axis being enclosed by a faired sponson 14. The sponson may enclose also gearing or other mechanism for retracting the unit from the position shown to an upper position where it is partially housed within a recess 15 in the hull. Folding doors 16 complete the hull profile when the unit is lowered. Alternatively the housing 10 maybe pivoted to the strut 11 or to a pair of such struts so that when the struts are swung upwardly the housing will pivot thereon under the action either of gravity or an extensible link secured between the housing and the 'strut. The strut may be provided with rollers engaging in trackways on the hull so that the strut and the housing 10 may be retracted to a position above and close to the upper surface of the hull.
