699,981. Batteries. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. July 10, 1951, No. 16371/51. Class 53. A storage battery separator consists of a mat 26 of glass fibres impregnated with a porous substance and provided with ribs 28 to which is attached a glass fibre mat 32. The impregnating substance for the mat 26 may consist of microporous rubber or of particles of an inorganic substance bound together with elastomers, for example diatomaceous earth and a suspension of butadiene styrene copolymer or of neoprene latex. A mixture of silica and aluminium silicate may be used with ammonium alginate and rubber latex. In another example clay is mixed with gelatin and a suspension of polystyrene. The mixtures may also contain wetting agents. Fig. 6 shows part of an apparatus for making the separator. The glass fibre mat 26 is unwound from a roll and passed over a drum 38 and under a coater 40, the front wall 42 of which is provided with ribs 43 and is curved at its lower end and spaced from the periphery of the drum as shown at 44. The impregnating material for the mat 26 is fed into the coater 40 in a plastic condition and is pressed into the mat as this moves beneath the end 44 of the coater while at the same time the ribs 43 mould grooves and ribs in the top surface of the plastic material on the mat 26. The covering mat 32 is unwound from a roll and pressed against the ribbed surface 28 by a roller 50. The ribs being in a plastic state adhere to the mat 32. The completed web is then passed through an oven and then cut into pieces of the required size by a reciprocating knife.
