Abstract

540,591. Moulding accumulator casings. VARLEY DRY ACCUMULATORS, Ltd., and SZPER, J. A. June 22, 1940, No. 10767. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In a dry accumulator, the casing is moulded around the electrodes and porous separators. The electrodes 10, 11 may be separated by glass wool in sheet form 12 treated with rubber latex and a filling material such as diatomaceous earth, aluminium oxide, or aluminium silicate. The separators may project slightly as at 13, Fig. 3, the projecting parts being then bent around the edges of the electrodes to produce a continuous layer 14, Fig. 4, of separating material. A further sheet of separating material may be placed around the electrode assembly, around which the outer casing 22 is formed by a moulding process which forces the casing material into intimate contact with the whole outer surface of the electrode assembly. Before the moulding operation, a porous pottery or ebonite block 48 to support the vent tube 30 is arranged as shown with its ends beneath the connection bridges 16, 17 and filling material 21 added so that the electrodes, separators, bridges and block form a compact and solid block. The vent tube 30 rests on the top of the porous block 48 and may be formed integrally with a porous partition which closes the inner end of the tube to prevent the escape of solid particles. The casing may be composed of hard rubber or ebonite or synthetic resin. The casing may be roughly formed, the electrode assembly inserted and the whole placed in a separable mould, heat and pressure being applied so that the casing material flows and forms a continuous and homogeneous casing in intimate contact with the electrode assembly ; or the assembly may be inserted in a mould, the casing material being added in the form of sheets or as a liquid or powder. The initial part of the curing process may be carried out in the mould under heat and pressure and the battery then removed from the mould and transferred to an oven where the curing is completed. Various alternative methods of forming the casing are briefly described involving spraying, dipping, cold-casting &c. In one of these a latex mixture is poured into a porous plaster mould in which the electrode assembly is positioned, the rubber depositing on the electrodes due to absorption of moisture by the porous mould.
