Abstract
699,670. Electrostatic filters. HEINRICH, R. F. Nov. 8, 1951, No. 26156/51. Class 39(i) The invention relates to an apparatus for precipitating suspended dust particles from gases of the " Venetian blind " type in which the gas enters a conical or tapered chamber at a high velocity, the inlet being at the wide end of the chamber. The chamber walls 4 are composed of members having small gaps between them. The major part of the gas stream is withdrawn through these gaps in a direction nearly opposite to the original direction. The dust is thrown out of this part of the gas stream before it leaves the chamber by the centrifugal forces set up by the sharp change in direction. The remaining part of the gas stream together with the dust is withdrawn from the narrow end 7 of the chamber, and passed through any conventional separator 8, after which it is normally re-circulated. The invention consists in electrically charging the dust particles, in charging the chamber wall to the same sign, and in collecting the dust particles repelled from the chamber walls on electrodes charged to the opposite sign. As shown, the dust particles are charged in the zone 1 formed by electrodes 2, 5, and the collecting electrodes 6 are in line with and connected to the non-discharging electrodes 5. The collecting electrodes 6 may be composed of inclined shoots or may be plain plates. The members constituting the chamber walls 4 are curved to provide dust pockets for collecting dust particles charged to the same sign as the chamber walls. The chamber walls may be inclined to the vertical.
