Abstract

699,381. Slitting sheet material. MANN & CO. Ltd., G. Aug. 14, 1952. [Aug. 21, 1951] No. 19692/51. Class 31 (i). A device for slitting sheet material primarily for use in a confined space in a printing or other machine whilst the sheet is being drawn positively past the device comprises a driven rotary disc cutter 12 mounted to co-act with a stationary replaceable cutter block 14 supported by the outermost part 11 of an arm 10 projecting from a boss 9 provided on a pivoted mounting bracket 3, the innermost upwardly projecting end of the arm. 10 being shaped at 18 to be of thin cross-section with a tapered leading edge 18a so that slit material can pass readily by with little disturbance of the cut edges of the material. The mounting bracket 3 is pivotally mounted on a shaft 6 and is moved by a handle 5 or other means to its operative or inoperative position in either of which positions it is retained in position by means of a spring-loaded plunger 4 provided on a fixed bracket 2. The cutter, which is spring-pressed towards the cutter block, is driven in the direction of travel of the sheet by means of gears 19, 20, 21. The cutter may be driven in the opposite direction. The forward end of the cutter block and of the mounting arm therefor are curved at 17 to provide a leading-in edge for the sheet material approaching the cutter. There may be a plurality of slitting devices. The device may be mounted in the machine immediately after the delivery cylinder at the end of the sheet supporting tapes 8 but it can be mounted in any other position e.g. whilst the sheet is travelling vertically or at an inclination. If a special fixing is needed this may comprise a driving shaft for the cutter on which the mounting bracket can be pivoted and a fixed sleeve bearing carrying the retaining bracket, or the mounting bracket when fixed.
