1297811 Winding webs CHAMBON Ltd 20 Jan 1970 [7 Feb 1969] 6711/69 Heading B8R A web winding machine comprises a winding drum 2 and a cradle 3 for moving a mandrel M between a loading position 3a, a web take-up position 3b, and a position 3c where the cradle 3 deposits the mandrel M on a support structure including spaced parallel beams 12 which are pivotally movable under the control of a pneumatic cylinder 18 to lower a completed roll R to the ground. During the winding operation the mandrel M is urged against the winding drum 2 by a pneumatically controlled lever arrangement 38-41 and when the roll being wound has reached the desired diameter the web W is severed by a cutter 45 in such a manner as to produce a tapered leading edge which is secured to a new mandrel, either manually or by a known take-up system, at the position 3b. The cutter 45 comprises an air motor 46 mounting a serrated rotary blade 47 which is movable along a line extending transversely of the direction of movement of the web W. During traverse the edge of the blade 47 is received in a slot 48 provided in a backing plate 49 mounted between the side frames 1 of the machine, the air motor 46 being carried on a casing 50 slidable, under the pneumatically controlled action of an endless chain 60, along a horizontal shaft 51 extending between the side frames 1 (Fig. 2, not shown).
