Abstract

1,158,553. Feeding webs. ROTOMEC S.p.A. 29 Sept., 1966 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 43570/66. Heading B8R. Apparatus for attaching the end of a new roll 15 to the web 2 from an expiring roll 5 comprises feed rollers 22, 23, cylinders 26, 27 carrying respectively a helical knife 28 and a coacting block 55, and a pair of cylinders 37, 38 with zones 39 for receiving adhesive strips by which ends of the webs can be joined, the rollers and cylinders being separated and at rest during normal feed of the web 2 by rollers 1 to a printing or other machine but being brought into operation when joining is to be effected by the adhesive strips. The end of the new roll 15 is attached to its underlayer by adhesive spots 52, Fig. 8, and has adhesive patches 53, 54 on its outer face. The web 2 during normal running passes between idler rolls 7, 8 to the feed rolls 1. When the roll 5 is nearly exhausted, the positions of rolls 5, 15 are reversed the roll 15 moving into the position previously occupied by the roll 5. Previously, adhesive strips have been applied at 39 to cylinders 37, 38 and adhesive strips to the cylinder 27 adjacent to the block 55 by the attendant. An endless band 9 pivoted at 10 is now brought into contact with the roll 15 by a pneumatic device 11 and an arm 19 is pivoted about the axis of roller 8 by a pneumatic device 14 to bring a supporting roller 16 into engagement with the running web 2. Also, aclutch-andbrake device 25 coupled to the drive shaft 4 of the printing, &c., machine and to the rollers and cylinders 22, 23, 26, 27, 37, 38, is actuated to drive the rollers and cylinders at a surface speed equal to that of the web 2. Further, a clutch 13 coupled to shaft 4 is thrown in to drive the belts 9 at the speed of web 2 so that the surface of roll 15 is rotated at that speed. In addition, a pneumatic device 24 is actuated to move the roller 22 downwardly so that rollers 22, 23 engage the web 2, and the circuit of an electromagnet 33 is closed to cause a scraper blade 32 to engage the web 2. At this point, a roller 17 pivotally mounted on arm 19 is moved by a pneumatic device 18 to press the web 2 against the adhesive parts 53, 54 of the new roll 15 so that the webs stick together, and the adhesive parts 52 are torn away. The leading edge of the new web is now carried by the web 2 between the rollers 7, 8, 22, 23, and both webs are positively fed by rollers 22, 23. When the leading edge of the new web reaches the scraper 32, the latter breaks the bond at 53 and deflects the new web upwardly between faster-moving rollers 35 which cause the bond at 54 also to be broken. A switch 36 is actuated by the leading edge of the new web causing an electromagnet 34 to be actuated to raise the scraper 32 to inoperative position. At the same time the switch causes energization of an electromagnet 47 so as to move a pivoted tappet 46 on an oscillating lever 45 into alignment with an arm 50 on a lever 29 carrying the lower cutting cylinder 27 so that the lever 45 moves the lever 29 to bring the cylinders 26, 27 together. A second lever 40 carrying the movable cylinder 37 of the adhesive-strip applying cylinders 37, 38 is connected by a link 41 to the lever 29 so that the cylinders 27, 37 move at the same time. The lever 45 is oscillated by a cam 42 on the cylinder 38. The knife 28 now cuts through the two webs, the cut-off end of the new web passing out of the apparatus via the rollers 35. The severed end of the rear part of the old web 2 adheres to the cylinder 27 and is stripped therefrom by a cam-operated scraper 31 so as to pass out of the machine. A knife 20 on the arm 19 is operated to cut-off the old web 2 adjacent to the roll 5. The adjacent cut ends of the two webs arrive at the cylinders 37, 38 where the adhesive strips are applied to join the ends. A switch 49 is now operated by the cam 42 to activate an electromagnet 48 to move the tappet 46 to inoperative position so that cylinders 27, 37 are moved away from cylinders 26, 38 respectively. The roller 22 and belt 9 are now moved to inoperative position and the drive to the rollers 22, 23, cylinders 26, 27, 37, 38 and belt 19 disengaged, the clutch and brake device 25 becoming operative to retard the rollers &c. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 822,921.
